Focus on the fish

Whew! What a fun ride. 11 Christmas parties later and I’m still here. That was the craziest Christmas ever. The snow came a little too late for a White Christmas! We are now catching up on some household chores and trying to get back to regular life. April sent us pictures from her Christmas. I am going to send them out to everyone who helped out in the process, what a blessing it was to be part of that!

Here’s what I want to talk about today: Luke 5:1-7 (NIV)  -

“One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.  So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.”

These verses have been extremely helpful throughout the last week or so for me and here’s why:

When we went to help April, we raised $850 from our awesome friends to give to her (think of the money as the fish in the story). We didn’t want to give April cash money, so we wanted to buy her like a Visa gift card she could use anywhere. Well, they don’t sell them in increments of $850 so we had to buy (8) $100 gift cards, each with a $5.95 charge on them…which is about $48 total of charges. Now, we could have flipped out over this and gotten really bummed about it, or we could have still been happy that we were able to bless her with $800. Remember, think about the fish. If the disciples focused only on the fish and how 48 of the total 850 flipped out of the nets because they were so full, we would think the disciples were stupid, but this is exactly what we do every day. In Luke 5:6, it says that their nets began to break, which means that they could have focused on how the nets were about to break and how they would have to buy new nets and how the boat is about to sink and then they would have to pull the boat out from underneath the water and then get all the water out….or….they could focus on the fact that they worked all day and got no fish but now at the end of their day, they have so much fish that their nets are full. That’s a lot of money to a fisherman! Who cares if the nets break and/or the boat sinks a little! You are blessed like crazy!

This helped when I thought about the 11 Christmas parties we had to go to. I am blessed that all of my family is alive and that I get to see them. I am blessed that we have a working vehicle to drive us from Toledo to Kalamazoo to see family that we don’t see very often. I am UBER blessed to have a Prius that got us 40 mpg the whole way going 80 mph! I am blessed to still be in one piece and to have not gotten in an accident during the 300+ miles we drove in 18 hours. I am blessed that we have so many friends and family that loves us, that we get to have 11 Christmas parties when there are people who don’t have anyone to spend Christmas with. I am SUPER blessed to have a wife that I get to spend every moment of Christmas with. And I am blessed beyond belief to understand the meaning of Christmas and to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus, who came at just the right time for all of us sinners to die for us, so that we can be friends with God forever. Thank you God!!!

So today, count your blessings, focus on the fish, not the nets breaking or the boat sinking. If you are reading this, then chances are that you have some sort of computer or phone and that is something to be grateful for.

Christmas parties, family Christmas, Christmas miracle

Only five more Christmas parties to go!

We had an awesome time tonight with our LifeGroup party! We had a no $ amount white elephant and Emily and I got a mug made by this new girl in our LifeGroup! It has a tree on it which is perfect because Emily loves anything with trees on it, and she also loves mugs. So it actually turned out well for us.

I’ve had good Christmas parties so far…now begins the family ones, which are not as fun…unfortunately. we don’t want to go to Kalamazoo…but we have to. We feel like our real family is our family with God… our Christian family. We feel like we can actually be ourselves with them. Don’t get me wrong, our immediate families are fine, it’s just the extended family like grandparents and aunts and uncles…blah. good luck everyone dealing with this.

I’m really excited for all the people who will come to church this weekend who normally don’t go to church. CedarCreek had an awesome service. It was one of their better ones of the last couple of years. I’m really excited that my mom is going which means the rest of my family could be going too! I can’t make it because I’ll be in Kalamazoo, which sucks..but I already talked about that. I wish I could go with them.

Follow up on the single mom who we adopted for Christmas – we were able to raise and give her $800 plus a $100 gift card to Kroger. She was blown away. It is really nice to meet someone that you know will not spend it foolishly but actually use it for her kids’ Christmas.

I’ll talk more about the $800 later…this is getting too long.

Phone, 5K, Frantic

I get my galaxy nexus phone today and I am blogging from it right now! It is HUGE. It almost feels too big. We’ll see…I’m going to test it out for a week and then if I think it’s too big then I will sell it and buy another 4G phone. I’ll keep the updates here.

Emily is running a 5K tomorrow. It’s her second one in a row. She wants to do one every month on 2012. Way to go Emily! I ran with her last month and didn’t train for it. She beat me and I got a stress fracture in my foot from it. So now I am out of the annual all flag football game called the Santa bowl students versus leaders at our church.

I feel like I am at the top of the roller coaster looking down at the huge hill because this next week is about to get crazy. Here’s the schedule:
Saturday Christmas shopping all over town.
Sunday Christmas party
Monday Christmas party
Tuesday Christmas party
Wednesday office Christmas party
Thursday church and LifeGroup Christmas party
Friday Christmas in Kalamazoo with Emily’s family.
Saturday brunch with Emily’s family, Christmas with my family
Sunday Christmas with Emily’s family, then my family.

Dang. I just want to keep Jesus the focus amongst all that. Pray for me.

Christmas Christmas Christmas

The Samsung galaxy nexus came out today and I bought it. Merry Christmas to me! It will be here tomorrow and I will play with it all weekend. I’ll let you know how that goes. I’m pretty pumped about it. I will be selling my old phone to offset the cost.

Also, I compiled a pretty good Christmas list. I just sent it to Emily. We are going to get all of our shopping done Saturday…with everyone else in all of America! We are going to do as much as we can online and then get the rest in an actual store…so 1990s.

We are adopting a family for Christmas. We’ve asked all of our friends to help out and boy have they! We raised $500 in one day for this family so the single mom of 5 can get her kids a nice Christmas. We’re going to try and go shopping with her like it’s a shopping spree! Another friend of ours is going to buy Kroger gift cards for her so her groceries are paid. And…to top it off, CedarCreek is giving away honey baked Ham dinners this weekend, so she will have that too! And, Emily got a Turkey from her work so we can give her that too! God is awesome. It reminds me of Philippians 4:13 NLT

For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

If you’d like to help with our adopt a family for Christmas, please email me at wade.sobczak@gmail.com or send money via PayPal to the same email. Emily and I are going to buy gift cards for her. Thanks! And merry Christmas!

Christmas, Chiefs & Cheese

I want to start blogging. I have wanted to start for a while, and I’m seriously always at a computer, but I just don’t do it. My friend, Kevin(shoutout to Kev Con) just started blogging again and it got the bug kicking in me. So here goes nothing:

Firstly, I can’t figure out what I want for Christmas. Emily is great at this, she has a list of 15 things, done. Me…not so much. The best I came up with is a tuning peg for my banjo. I think part of the problem is that I just buy what I want throughout the year. Take for example the thing I am typing on right now…my ASUS transformer tablet. I bought that myself before my internship started, it was a good purchase that was well worth it for what I am doing in my internship. And take for example the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone, I’m pretty pumped about it. I will be buying that as soon as it comes out. I honestly just want gift cards. Gift cards to Panera, the movies, Chili’s, gas cards, stuff like that. Because since I buy everything throughout the year, Christmas is a good time to kinda repay myself, I don’t know.

Secondly, the Chiefs fired their head coach, Todd Haley. I never liked this guy from the beginning. He’s a hot head and a psycho. I think he was necessary, though. I also think that Herm Edwards was necessary too. Herm took over after Dick Vermeil. The Chiefs were the oldest team in the league with Vermeil (probably because he thought they were all young since he was like 80). Herm came in and cleaned house and got all young talent. Herm couldn’t coach though, so Todd Haley came in and worked the crap out of those young guys and taught them how to play hard. Tamba Hali lost like 50 lbs. and became a linebacker from a D-lineman. Now, we need a proven coach who can take the good talent on the team and make it great I’m hoping for Cowher.

Thirdly, I just ate the pasta that Panera now offers. It was real good. I had the pesto sacchettini. Real good. Tons of cheesy goodness. It was seriously the only meal I’ve ever had at Panera that actually filled me up. I had the large, so no soup or salad. You should try it sometime.
